Vermutlich 8-(

Ich habe php4 mit apt-get installiert und die Apache config automatisch 
anpassen lassen. Es hat alles sofort funktioniert (Woody 3.0).

Du brauchst auch noch dises Zeile

LoadModule php4_module /usr/lib/apache/1.3/libphp4.so

Ganz praktisch ist auch:

# directory index.  Separate multiple entries with spaces.
#
<IfModule mod_dir.c>
    DirectoryIndex index.html index.php index.htm index.shtml index.cgi
</IfModule>
