Debian works just fine.  It's those darn applications.  I'm running a
486-66 with 16 MB RAM, EGA video and 500MB of disk space (only 40% used) 
and it is solid as a web and mailing list server plus ham radio
packet gateway. 

It's in a remote location and doesn't have X installed (hint, hint).
