Hehe... what about wax then? As in "thermal wax" - see for instance:

300 DPI is actually deceiving as the wax melt together on the paper to
create a beautiful photo realistic finish. The above link quotes
$2.25/page and waxing (couldn't resist) time from 10 to 45 minutes.
