simple newbie question

I'm just getting Debian up and running, as my first Linux system.

The install and initial boot process went well; now I'm trying to load
additional packages.  Dselect tells me that I am missing:
/var/lib/dpkg/methods/mnt/Packages when I try to load additional debian
packages.  I'm sure this is simple to fix, I just don't know how to fix it.
