In fact I realize that I am NOT using xscreensaver.  
I am using the xlock program (xlockmore-gl 4.12-4).  
The buggy mode is "world". 
My /var/lib/gnome/Debian/Screen/Lock/Space/World.desktop is:  

[Desktop Entry]
Name=World 
Comment=World 
Exec=xlock -remote -nice 19 -mode world
Terminal=0
Type=Application

I am running Debian slink and xdm3.3.2.3a-11
