Config multiple ips on one linux box

Hi,

    I am trying to set up seval ip addess on my linux machine. But when I

run something like

    ifconfig eth0:1 203.63.219.30 up arp broadcast 203.63.219.255

I got the following messages:

SIOCSIFADDR: Operation not supported by device
SIOCSIFFLAGS: Operation not supported by device
SIOCSIFBRDADDR: Operation not supported by device
SIOCSIFFLAGS: Operation not supported by device

    Am I missing something from my kernel(2.2.6)?? If I am, what is it??
