Sounds like /dev/cdrom is symlinked to the wrong "real" device.

What device is your CDROM?  Probably hdc or hdd?

hda = primary master
hdb = primary slave
hdc = secondary master
hdd = secondary slave

Try mount /dev/hd? /mnt


Once you get it working, re-link your /dev/cdrom to the right device:

ln -s /dev/hd? /dev/cdrom
