I installed debian on a Optiplex GX240. No problems whatsoever. Never tried X though. Happily running a email server for about 250 users.
Also installed Debian and Samba 3 on two Poweredges 1400 and 600SC with RAID5. No problems there either. Happily providing fileserver, printserver and intranet access. (Never tried X here either)
