Is the java sun 1.3.1 version compatible with testing? If so, do they
have debs, apt sources, or just plain download?

If that really means jdk1.x, You could try a newer java.
There are several options, some which meet the criteria for "free"
software, some which don't.
I use jdk 1.3.1 from Sun.
