IIRC, you can use the /dev/discs hierarchy provided by devfs.  e.g. in
your menu.lst

  kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.4.19 root=/dev/discs/disc0/part1

(or whatever partition you need).  You can also use the full name of
the device e.g. /dev/scsi/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/part1
