Without mouse the xserver can not start. What kind of mouse do you 
use? At what kind of port? What does 'ls -l /dev/mouse' print to 
the screen?

Yes, it's hard in the begining.

Did you already try 'dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86' ? to 
configure your mouse and xserver?
