statistics mode, supporting R,S and others

I've already sent a message to the ESS mailing list. The problem here
doesn't have anything to do with R, I don't think. Some problem with the
interaction between ESS and emacs 21. The ESS people also don't make any
claims to support emacs 21 prerelase.

ESS does start up R, I think, but you can't get to it because emacs 21
freezes up.
