ALSA problems

I recently upgraded to 2.4.6 kernel and alsa 0.9xxxbeta; I had
previously been using 2.4.2 and (I think) alsa 0.5.

Sound is now disabled at startup, though I can turn it back on by
starting up the mixer (gnome desktop, woody system). There are
several other anomolies:

1) Logs show errors
Jul 24 16:09:44 wheat modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module sound-slot-1
Jul 24 16:09:44 wheat modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module sound-service-1-0

modules.conf does not refer to either (uses sound-slot-0 and
sound-service-0-1).

2) When I run alsaconf I get this error:
Loading driver:
Starting ALSA sound driver (version 0.9.0beta4): sbawe.
alsactl not found, mixer settings will not be restored.
Setting the PCM volume to 100% and the Master output volume to 50%
amixer: Mixer 0/0 open error: No such file or directory

Could not initialize the mixer, the card was probably
not detected correctly.

3) When I run alsactl
wheat:/usr/local/rootlog# alsactl store
alsactl: SND CTL open error: Sound protocol is not compatible

4) Some error message about alsactl or alsaconf scrolls by when I start
the system.

Can anyone suggest what is happening, or how to fix it?

By the way, alsaconf is still at v 0.5 (sid as well as woody), even
though the drivers are at 0.9x.
