/etc/init.d/fetchmail not running at startup

I have fetchmail installed correctly, as it runs quite nicely when I
start it manually. However, on startup, the /etc/init.d/fetchmail
script produces the following:

no mail servers have been specified.
fetchmail is already running.

It's as if the script is ran as some user other than root.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Best regards,
