Delete the SXXxdm under your /etc/rcx.d directory (in my case the default runlevel is 2 so /etc/rc2.d), then create a .xinitrc (beware of the '.' before the 'x' ) file under your home dir containing this line only:

gnome-session

When you issue startx a gnome session is started at your will

Same. Delete SXXgpm under /etc/rcx.d
