MySQL default nstallation under Debian :
config files are in /etc/mysql
log files are in /var/log
databases are stored in /var/lib/mysql
It should work when you install the debian packages
mysql-server, mysql-client, libmysqlclient
Else look for error in the logs, tweak the config file.
