"modprobe 3c59x" doesn't do anything - or not that i can see.  the machine
hangs (not crashes, just hangs) for about five minutes or so.  i rebooted
at that point.

"depmod -a -v" gives a big list of modules, inculding 3c59x.  does this
mean that it is loading?

also, i saw this message at boot-up which may be of interest:

eth0: Unknown interface: Operation not supported by device

so there we are...
