I've got -R in the append line.

This setting did not work for me. I have the following lines in
/etc/X11/XF86Config:
Section "Pointer"
Protocol "MouseSystems"
Device "/dev/gpmdata"

... and that you have updated packages. With older packages, the problem
persisted with these settings.
