apache.. how to keep newer verison than that of Debvian apt-get

I had installed apache from Their site, version 1.3.12, and then wanted to install some Debian www based utilities (dwww), and so had apt-get install apache, it installed version 1.3.3, and to a different place, and name (httpd/apache).

Is there any way to overlay the debian version with the newer one, still having debian package system stay happy, knowing that apache is installed?

Also, is tomcat included in the newer (potato) release?

Thanks,
Gregory
