Where is the process of creating a pattern list for
TeX documented? Is it automatable?
Very much so. its a famous bit of research by Frank Liang,
encapsulated in the program "patgen" by Knuth. The details
are in the source of patgen
Are changes usually made directly
to the pattern list, or is the original word list changed and the
patterns regenerated?
I suspect the former, in the rare cases that these things
are enhanced. One may adjust patterns by hand anyway.
I would regard the pattern list as a work in its own right,
and its own source.
