By default updmap uses type 3 fonts. xpdf (and probably others) can
only deal with type 1 fonts. Therefore, it would be more appropriate
for updmap to default to type 1 fonts. I have confirmed that this change
makes dvips output compatible with xpdf. I suggest the following patch:

--- /etc/texmf/dvips/updmap.orig        Tue Apr 16 09:37:42 2002
+++ /etc/texmf/dvips/updmap     Mon Apr 15 14:54:21 2002

teTeX 3.0 has been recently uploaded to unstable. Further there is
the package cm-super containing the cm-super fonts, which are
equivalent to the EC fonts, regarding the font sets. Further there is
the lmodern package for people needing not that much, but can't
do a huge download.

1. Simply installing the package cm-super should solve your problem
2. Installing lmodern and \usepackage{lmodern} is the other way.

I guess we can close the bug at this point.

  Hilmar
