This is what happens when I run pdftex on the sample file
/usr/share/texmf/doc/pdftex/base/samplepdf.tex:

polya:/tmp/pdftex $ pdftex samplepdf

(samplepdf.tex{/usr/share/texmf/pdftex/config/pdftex.cfg}
Babel <v3.6Z> and hyphenation patterns for american, french, german, ngerman, n
ohyphenation, loaded.
(/usr/share/texmf/pdftex/plain/misc/pdfcolor.tex){/usr/share/texmf/dvips/config
/pdftex.map}Segmentation fault
