Bug#98524: pdf?)latex fails to use dutch hyphenation patterns

Filip,

The old, nonfree Dutch hyphenation patterns were replaced with
newer, free hyphenation patterns. At the moment, there are no
nonfree files being distributed with teTeX, thus the tetex-nonfree
package is a virtual package. (Thanks for letting us know about
the reference in the README file -- you're right, it should be
changed.)

Changing the language.dat file was the right thing to get Dutch
hyphenation working, but you now need to recompile the formats
that TeX uses.

To do so, type (as root)

   fmtutil --all

More information about fmtutil can be found at
<http://www.eskimo.com/~c/debian/tetex-manpages/fmtutil.8.html>.
