Hmm, interesting. 'xdvi +expert' starts up with a window slightly wider,
as if the buttons were supposed to be there, but no buttons appear.
Strangely, if I press 'x' twice, the buttons appear.

'xdvi -expert' starts with a narrower window -- presumably, no buttons
should appear. Pressing 'x' once causes the buttons to appear. I think
this part is correct, but '+expert' doesn't seem to be working correctly.

That's right.

No! But pressing 'x' twice will show the buttons, as I said above.

No, it doesn't work for me. I'm using libxaw6 (4.0.2-1), FYI.

Yes, absolutely. I maintain an Xaw package (axe), and I had to do a lot of
hacking to get it even just to compile on Xaw 7, and more hacking to get
it to *work* with Xaw 7. Compiling under Xaw 6 in XF4 seems to have
problems, though... currently, there's a bug against aXe that I don't know
how to fix, because it compiles under Xaw 6 but doesn't work correctly. so
if you want a permanent fix for this bug, I'd suggest you fix xdvi to work
with Xaw 7.
