Mm.  Yes, I knew that -- I was thinking about the way that some of
the scripts have some crazy code to set things differently
depending on which Bourne-shell variant they might be using (see
the top of mkindex, for instance).

The Perl scripts I mentioned seem to be from ConTeXt.

Probably the best universal solution.  Personally, I just change
the permissions back to 775 on directories and 664 on files when I
need to -- I mostly use PostScript fonts, and there are only two
(completely trusted) users on the system, so that works out fine.
I wouldn't be thrilled about my solution on a real multiuser
system, however.
