It seems this is a bug of essential.dvi or a bug of pslatex.
If you commented out \usepackage{pslatex} in essential.tex
then you will get the correct essential.dvi.
If you prefer times fonts then you should set \usepackage{txfonts}
(of course you need txfonts package).

It does not complain but it fails to display "dotless j" etc.
if you look carefully ;)
Anyway, pslatex is a bit obsolete and essential.tex should
not use it, IMHO.
