With mariadb-server installed (but startup disabled), and also KDE
akonadi/kde-pim installed (and using its own mysqld instance), the
mariadb-server package upgrade fails:

Stop it yourself and try again!

This report is a duplicate of bug #1032047 which is fixed in unstable. Instead of trying to get merging right, I hope you don't mind I just close this bug.
