I always use Knoppix for something like this. Boot the CD with knoppix 2 typed 
in at the boot: prompt then hit the enter key now use once booted:

mount /dev/hda2 /mnt/hda2
chroot /mnt/hda2/ /sbin/lilo -v

And that should install it if the lilo.conf is setup to install into the MBR 
otherwise you would need to edit the file before running the chroot command. 
Also you can use mkboot to make yourself a boot floppy.
