The various servers from Xfree86 3.3.6 CAN be used in XFree86 4.1 provided you add the "xserver-common-v3" package plus the server you want to use. This particular package provides (quote from package discription):
"xserver-common-v3 contains files required by XFree86 version 3.x X servers, and includes a text-based program (xf86config-v3) that configures the /etc/X11/XF86Config file, whose primary purpose is to describe the computer's video and input hardware to the X server." There is more to the Package description that would provide some more insight.
I know about this because I had my system configured to run the XF86_SVGA server for about 2 months until I learned that the newer xserver-xfree86 supported my card. It worked just fine configured that way.
I think this package was included/created specifically for those cards like the S3 that are NOT supported by the newer server. I also had a friend that used this combination to get a S3 card to work.
