woody upgrade & odd DNS/SSH behavior

I just upgraded my potato box to woody. Here is a relevant line from my
/etc/hosts:

192.168.1.1 doma.mattyt.net doma

Something I used to be able to do no longer works, namely:

mattyt@igra:~$ ssh -l mattyt doma
ssh: doma.mattyt.net: Name or service not known

...but:

mattyt@igra:~$ ssh -l mattyt 192.168.1.1
mattyt@192.168.1.1's password:

Any idea why doma no longer works but 192.168.1.1 does?

Oh, also:

$ ping doma
PING doma.mattyt.net (192.168.1.1): 56 data bytes
64 bytes from 192.168.1.1: icmp_seq=0 ttl=255 time=0.4 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.1.1: icmp_seq=1 ttl=255 time=0.6 ms

--- doma.mattyt.net ping statistics ---
2 packets transmitted, 2 packets received, 0% packet loss
round-trip min/avg/max = 0.4/0.5/0.6 ms

Odd that doma is recognized for ping but not for ssh.

TIA for any help :)
