I'm using amd64 myself too and can't reproduce it either.

The only change between -13 and -14 is about engines.

Can you tell me something more about your hardware?  Do you have some
crypto hardware available?

Can you remove the files from /usr/lib/ssl/engines/ (that are part of the
libssl0.9.8 package) and see if that solves it?  If it does, can you find
out which module of those that is causing it?

If you want to run it with debugger, please install the libssl0.9.8-dbg
package so that you have debug information.
