This is a know problem: yaird _requires_ linux-2.6.8 or higher to run, so you 
cannot install 2.6.24 from 2.4.27 if only yaird is installed.

Solution 1: install initramfs-tools (does this already work for Sparc?)
Solution 2: install a kernel-image < 2.6.13 so you can use the old mkinitrd
Solution 3: compile your own kernel
