Since we're on the topic, I'm adding a little log extract of my Radeon test on
XFree86. Comments between square brackets are mine, of course.

(II) RADEON(1): initializing int10
(--) RADEON(1): Chipset: "ATI Radeon VE QY (AGP)" (ChipID = 0x5159)
[A.K.A. Radeon 7000, Chip detected is the right one but it's not an AGP board]
(--) RADEON(1): Linear framebuffer at 0x08000000
(--) RADEON(1): MMIO registers at 0x10000000
(--) RADEON(1): BIOS at 0x00040000
(--) RADEON(1): VideoRAM: 8192 kByte (64-bit SDR SDRAM)
[Eight megabytes? Wrong detection, this board has 32 mb]
(WW) xf86ReadPciBIOS: Unsupported on this platform.
[What a sad thing to hear... any way to implement it?]
(WW) RADEON(1): Video BIOS not detected in PCI space!
(WW) RADEON(1): Attempting to read Video BIOS from legacy ISA space!
(WW) RADEON(1): Video BIOS not found!
(II) Loading sub module "ddc"
(II) LoadModule: "ddc"
(II) Reloading /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/libddc.a
(II) Loading sub module "i2c"
(II) LoadModule: "i2c"
(II) Loading /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/libi2c.a
(II) Module i2c: vendor="The XFree86 Project"
(WW) RADEON(1): Video BIOS not detected, using default PLL parameters!
(II) RADEON(1): PLL parameters: rf=2700 rd=67 min=12500 max=35000; xclk=16615
(==) RADEON(1): Using gamma correction (1.0, 1.0, 1.0)
(WW) RADEON(1): Mode 640x480 is out of range.
Valid mode should be between 640x480-0x0
[640x480 is sad, but would be better than nothing]
(EE) RADEON(1): No valid mode found for this DFP/LCD
(II) RADEON(1): If you have an analog monitor attached but no DFP/LCD try
specifying 'Option "CrtScreen"' in your X serverconfig file.
[Tried to specify that option, rebooted X then saw my Sun crash solidly. Even
STOP-A didn't work. Xfree log files reported that the video adapter wasn't
ready or similar stuff]

I think it's time for the debian xfree team to be brave and try to package the
new xfree, at least on SPARC since using a (non-Sun) PCI video card on Sparc
is a significant advantage for the community, and it's something even Solaris
lacks.
