I had a similar problem about a month ago on my SPARC5. After the
whiptail.deb installation the main screen froze, but the install process
itself continued. The bug should've been fixed on newer boot floppies.

Maybe SILO can't load kernels from >512MB on UltraSPARCs as well? That was
my problem, so I still boot from floppy. :-/
