It's there in Sid already (maybe Woody too -- haven't checked). If
launch the Gnome control center, go to Screensaver, and click on the
"Screensaver Options" tab, the second group box on the left has an
option called "Grab Desktop Images". If you uncheck that, the hacks
will operate on some bitmap (I don't know if you can specify the file --
never tried) rather than the desktop image.

For non-Gnome users, (and of course Gnome users can do this too), run
xscreensaver-demo, and do something similar.

Or, if you have a Lock icon on your Gnome panel, right click on it, and
click on Preferences from the popup menu -- this will run
xscreensaver-demo.

Does anyone know if xscreensaver-demo on Potato have an option like
that?

(BTW, Sid has version 3.34-1 of xscreensaver.)
