I got misguided by the fact that gcc-4.3 is installed explicitly. It appears that this is because the gfortran package needs gfortran-4.3 which needs gcc-4.3, though gcc-4.3 is not used. Therefore, I shall request you to give back lam on alpha once the new gcc-4.2 is uploaded, fixing that bug, rather than make another sourceful upload. I apologise for missing this point. Thank you.
