lintian is, apparently, out-of-date.  Prior to the release of python
2.0 with a GPL-compatible license the base package for python was
'python-base'.  Due to the (mainly license) problems with moving to
version 2.0, it was provided as python2-base.  (see potato to find
those packages)  Now a (new) Python Policy has been developed which
uses the naming scheme pythonX.Y and allows for multiple version to be
installed simultaneously.
