.. snip .. some good text about 500000 bugs

How about a slightly different approach:

Debian has 500,000 bugs!

Today the Debian project is proud to announce that it received its 500,000'th
bug report (http://bugs.debian.org/500000)!

Proud? Surely that is a lot of bugs!

The Debian project is a community. The community consists of developers,
testers, leaders, users, builders and many others. Everyone who takes the
time to report a bug gets two benefits: 1) they have a good chance of getting
their bug fixed by a fellow community member (try that with commercial
software!), and 2) they are helping everyone else in the community by
improving the quality of the Debian project. The Debian bug database is also
an invaluable tool for anyone trying to resolve a problem in any of the free
software packaged in Debian, whether they are using Debian or not.

Debian is proud that its users feel enough community spirit, and have enough
confidence in the Debian process, to take the time to report bugs. Debian
wants to thank all the NNN different users who have contributed bug reports
over the 15 years of the Debian project. Debian also wants to thank the NNN
people who have contributed to the discussion and closure of bugs.

Currently NNN bugs, of the 500,000, are open. Bug reporting rates have been
growing at NNN% per year, as the Debian user base grows. The top bug
reporter, XXX, has reported NNN bugs. The top bug fixer, XXX, has closed NNN
bugs.

Unlike commercial software, Debian encourages the active involvement of the
community in testing the software and reporting bugs and believes that this
is a central part of the Debian Social Contract. In return, Debian users
actually have the prospect of seeing their bugs fixed!
