Bug#959898: hp-setup does not support parallel port printers

Since I upgrade from stretch to buster, I can not use my old scanner
any more (HP PSC500 parallel port all-in-one device). I found, that
hp-setup as a part of hplip does not support parallel port any longer.
But in description of this package it is said. 

I tried to compile the package by myself, but ends in massive errors.
Is it possible to compile the package with parallel support?
