why don't you try 1GB swap, preferably on an external
drive ?
also if graphics is locked you can switch ttys with
command-option F2 or whatever, or try ssh login to
shut down.
it is true that some games do not support laptop
versions of graphics cards. the computer is not so
smart as to refuse to run if you want to try anyway,
this is linux, maybe some would like to hack it, but
it is like not as much fun anyway in my experience...
