Ibook G4 freezes

Hi,

My ibook often freezes after a few hours, I have been googling for months and
I can't find someone else with the same problem.

Freeze description :
well...it just freezes :) Neither keyboard nor touchpad are active (can't
switch to console nor typing anything, cursor doesn't respond to touchpad),
the screen keeps on displaying the application I was using, nothing moves :
just a snapshot.
I don't have another machine so I can't tell wether sshd still handles
connections, but it is very unlikely since when I plug an usb disk or an usb
wifi key, these usb devices' leds don't blink as they should. Looks like the
kernel oops-ed.
(I'm not sure, but I think after each crash, I can hear some writing
operations on hard drive)

When does it freeze ?
That's the most funny part : I use KDE, and it seems that launching GTK apps
get my laptop closer to the crash.
Calm down! I'm not trolling. It's very annoying since there is quite a lot of
GTK apps I would like to use.
But some GTK apps will drive my laptop right into crash half of the time.
For example, launching gimp or amule leads to crash just after the window
appeared most of the time.
However, freezes also happens when no GTK app is launched, but are far more
distant in time.
I still haven't found a simple way to reproduce this crash.

Hardware information :
Ibook G4 1.2 GHz, Ram 512 MB
My first thought was memory failure, but several memtest on large amount of
memory found nothing wrong. Apple 's hardware test said everything was OK.

Software :
Debian unstable
kernel : every packaged version from 2.6.12-1-powerpc (and a few below, can't
remember) to 2.6.14-2-powerpc, plus some version packaged by others.
Crash occurs even when most of deamons are stopped.
Suspend to ram runs smoothly.
Crashes don't leave any single line in log files.

Does anyone has an idea ?
I'm fed up with rebooting my laptop 6 times a day.

Kevin
