Yes, you would be able to make a single boot with Debian linux.
Mac-fdisk has the 'i' feature that initialise the entire disk before you
do your partition. (initialising means all data will be destroyed)

Still a native and a swap partition is recommended.

Yes, I am using Debian (woody) on my G3/400 Pismo, but will be migrating
to Sarge due to some problems with x-window startup.
