If the kernel is there, the distribution matters not. True, the
installation will be a bit more difficult if the distribution is not
ready for it, Genesi has a patched boot-floppies for debian on the
pegasos for example, but it is also possible to install without it.

Nope, as i understood it, the AmigaONE solved the problem with a
firmware upgrade, which worked around the problem, while the pegasos
guys did go for a hardware patch.
