The G3 desktops and minitowers were not outfitted with a PMU. Some of the
G4-based minitower systems are, but have certain known issues with pmud (because
lines from the PMU that are used to check lid state and such aren't connected,
and Linux developers don't know which ones those are without testing). As far as
the blue-and-white G3s go, though, even Apple's own OS can't put them into a
laptop-like sleep, because the hardware's just not there to do it. All they can
do is turn off the monitor and spin down the disks, which Linux/XFree86 can do
equally well (dunno about on flatpanels, but definitely with CRTs).
