2.4.18 SMP custom kernel woes

Hi

I'm having trouble getting a custom-compiled kernel to work on a G4 450Mhz SMP Mac. I first tried the 'kernel-image-2.4.18-powerpc-smp' package, but this didn't work as I needed the AIC7XXX driver compiled in, not as a module, due to my root fs being on an Adaptec scsi card.

kernel-image-2.2.20-pmac works just fine, but without the 2nd processor.

So I:

* got kernel-source-2.4.18-4
* patched it with kernel-patch-2.4.18-1
* used the kernel config file from the 2.4.18-powerpc-smp package, with AIC7XXX compiled into the kernel as the only change

The image builds, installs and starts to boot, but hangs loading the ide driver on the line

ide: Assuming 33Mhz system bus speed for PIO modes...

I get two CPU's recognised (2 penguins at the top), but does anyone have any suggestions as to why my kernel fails to finish booting?

Regards
Gordon
