the console does not support more then 8 bit color.  (rather it has no
more colors then that.)

i don't think mode is valid, but im not sure on that.

well with XFree 3.3.6 i just set the DefaultColorDepth to 32 in
/etc/X11/XF86Config (this would be 24 on X4 as the 32 hack is gone)
have you tried setting the colordepth there?

on my system i get 32 bit color in X while my console is in 8 bit
color.
