This is an old problem. I remember raising it at the genesis of the
GNOME project; Miguel apologised, as it was also the very beginning
of it all. I proposed the creation of one (1) source tree with one
 (1) makefile, along the lines of the linux kernel and the X11.
A unique tarball appeared where all the required sources were
gathered together, although still in different directories and no
single makefile. Then the monolith tarball was gone, and here we are
again with the good old problem and its consequences.
