Heh, I've been struggling with this problem for the past week, so
let's pool our knowledge.. First thing to find out (which IMO is very
important), what kernel version are you using, and where'd you get it
from?
It seems that some of the 2.2 kernels out there have a new input
system backported from 2.4, which requires new devices to be made..
I'd give you a link to the explanation about it, but my dns seems to
be incorrectly pointing linuxppc.org to linuxppc.com right now. :(
I read the earlier thread about stealing the Xpmac server from
linuxppc, but I've actually gotten
the video and keyboard settings right in XF86Config for the FBDev
server and I'd hate to have to
switch back to LinuxPPC again if I can help it. By the way, all I
had to do to get the video right
with fbdev was to run 'fbset -x' and insert the output of that into
the monitor section of my
XF86Config file as a mode.
This is actually a very good idea.. My only working setup was to
install the Xpmac RPM via Alien and using that, but only because XF3
refused to sync to any of the resolutions.. but maybe I should just
use the fbset -x thing..
My current mouse settings are 'Protocol "BusMouse"' 'Device
"/dev/adbmouse"' which are the settings
I gave gpm during its installation. If anyone has had any success
with getting adb mouses to work
in X or can think of something that would help, I'd very much appreciate it.
Well, if your kernel has the new input system, it will break
/dev/adbmouse.. otherwise I can't think of what the problem is.
However, I couldn't get my mouse (even with Xpmac) working with the
default potato kernel, I had to upgrade to one of Ben H's precompiled
ones.
Which leads to another question I've been mulling over the past few
days: why do the default, "stable" packages from potato fail to work
on many systems? And while it wasn't that hard to substitute for a
different kernal and X server for me, shouldn't the working binaries
be the one included in the distro's release?
</retorical questions>
Ahh well, I here there'll be XF4 packages soon to solve all our problems.
