unreadable & nonfunctional menus in openoffice

Hi,

Using openoffice for viewing M$-files goes fine, but all the menus and
buttons are unreadable: there is no text on display. Morevoer, clicking on
any off them will expand them to fullscreen size with no text, just a
gray background. Also the setup program expands into a fullscreen gray
background when i launch it from the KDE3 menu. The toolbar icons are
visible but clicking on them again expands them to fullscreen
grayness.

does anyone else experience this bizarre behaviour? any fixes for it?
