still having the same error - my suspicion is that by default the master branch is protected, and if I am not the owner of the repo, I will unable to push to the master branch.

this setting is under the Repository/Branch menu, but I do not see it the pkg-octave-team repos (I am listed as a "developer" of the project).

can you remove the "protected" status of the master branch or set my permission so that I can push to the repo?


is this acceptable as the "upstream" branch in the gbp created repo? or "upstream" must store exactly the same files as in the upstream tarball (such as the released source code tarball on github)?

ok, I will try to use the override_dh_auto_configure section to do all pre-installation changes and keep the upstream tarball unaltered.
